Editing for Authors
My experience editing for authors is varied and rigorous. As an editor my desire is to not only help writers refine and polish their written work before it is published, but to make it a mutual collaboration towards the specific needs of the project.
Ultimately, my goal is to deliver flawlessly polished content, capturing the precise tone and voice of each writer whilst enhancing overall quality.
I’ve been working with Jon for several years now and his copy-editing is an invaluable contribution to my writing process.
Many of the areas I consider during the editing process include:
Manuscript Assessment
I offer feedback on structure, coherence, and overall quality of the writing, including the target audience and genre.
Developmental Editing
If the manuscript requires substantial changes, I may suggest some developmental editing. This involves working closely with the author to improve the structure, organisation, and content of the work. This stage focuses on big-picture issues such as plot (for fiction), persuasive concepts (for non-fiction), character development, pacing, and overall coherence.
Line Editing
Line editing involves a more detailed review of the manuscript. Here I work on refining the language, improving sentence structure, and ensuring consistency in style and tone. This stage aims to enhance the readability and flow of the manuscript.
Copyediting
Copyediting involves a meticulous review of grammar, punctuation, spelling, and style. I correct errors, check for consistency, and ensure that the manuscript adheres to current publishing standards.
Proofreading
The final stage is proofreading. This is where I examine the manuscript for any remaining errors or typos. This step ensures that the manuscript is ready for publication.
After receiving the edited manuscript, authors review the suggested changes I make and may choose to accept or reject them. This often involves a back-and-forth process until both parties are satisfied with the final version.
I've collaborated with numerous notable authors such as Mark Gillespie, Mark West, Sadie Ryan, Jack Nicholls, and Kathryn Bonella, and many more.
